CAPITOLO GENERALE: New Insights and Challenges

The recently concluded 56th General Chapter of the Ministers of the Sick opens a new way of responding to the new challenges posed by the present situation of the world of health. It also presents new insights of the Camillian charism of service to the poor sick in the light of the universal mission for justice and solidarity in the healthcare world. The following are just some of the new calls that need to be pondered and acted respectively with determination and readiness to sacrifice. These are based on the newly approved Operational Guidelines (OG) and the Resolutions of the 56th General Chapter.

- Promotion and Protection of the Environment - a serious attention to the prevailing and perennial ecological problems that bring serious threat to health of human beings and the environment. Strategies for education and conscientization to these issues must be undertaken. Strong precaution against the purchase and use of food and pharmaceutical products that are produced by multinational companies that have records of environmental crimes especially in the developing countries and the financial institutions (banks) that engaged in the production and selling of arms. (OG #5; Res. #21). Segregation of solid waste products and conservation of water is recommended. (Res. #21).

- Commission for Justice and Solidarity in the world of health – a central organ for JPIC concerns of the Order on the level of the Consulta, Provinces and Delegations. (OG #7).

- Studies on the Social Doctrines of the Church – a serious consideration must be reflected in the curriculum of formation in all levels (canonical and on-going). Specialization along this field is encouraged. (OG #10).

- Ministers of the Infirm (M.I.) – the official name of the Order and the initial to be used by all religious. (Res. #18)

There are 12 sections under the Operational Guidelines and 48 Resolutions. These highlights does not then comprised the entire flesh of the approved motions but are new toppings to the new menu that we need to plan, decide and implement collectively.
